Why A Water Filter Pitcher Isn’t Good Enough

Which water filtration systems are the highest rated? A hand holds a clear glass of water against a white backdrop.

A water filter pitcher (such as Brita, Pur, HDX, etc.) is generally easy to find and can be a relatively cheap solution to getting drinkable water in your home. However, while these filters can be slightly better than tap water, they aren’t a good enough solution for getting the purest drinking water in your home. But why aren’t activated carbon water filters a good enough option?

What Do Water Filter Pitchers Do?

Water filtration pitchers work to improve the taste of your water. They can help to filter out some of your tap water’s contaminants, but they aren’t 100% effective. Standard filters will filter out contaminants such as chlorine, mercury, cadmium, copper, and zinc, but they won’t filter out more harmful contaminants like lead, arsenic, asbestos, pharmaceuticals, and other harmful chemicals and minerals.

While these types of filters can make your water taste slightly better, and they do filter out some contaminants, the contaminants they don’t fill out are more concerning. Heavy metals in the water like lead can have severe health effects if you are exposed to them for long periods of time. Constant exposure to lead can lead to Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Arsenic is another common chemical found in tap water that most water filter pitchers won’t filter out.

Water Filter Pitchers Don’t Get Changed Enough

Water filter pitchers need to have their filters changed at least once every 2 months, or after every 40 gallons. However, the majority of water filter pitcher users only change their filter once every four to six months, and sometimes wait even longer than that. Water pitcher filters can be very expensive, and overall are only good for a short-term solution. If you want a long-lasting solution, consider getting a home water filtration system and bypass the need for a water filter pitcher completely.

What is a Home Water Filtration System?

A home water filtration system fixes your water problems at the source. They filter all of the water that runs through your pipes, not just your drinking water. There are many benefits to having a whole house water filtration system including appliance longevity, better skin and hair health, and reduced need for products like fabric softener. Overall, you’ll get a much higher return on your investment when you use a water filtration system in your home.
