How Do Whole House Water Filtration Systems Work?
House water filter systems start with a pre-filter process. Water flows from your water source into your water line where larger particles and solids in the water go through a filter that traps the sediment.
Water then flows through an activated carbon filter to remove smaller particles from the water. These filters remove contaminants such as chloramines, calcium, magnesium, microns, herbicides, pesticides, and other impurities from your water.
Finally, your water goes through a post-filter process where water flows through a more robust filter cartridge to further improve your water quality.
What Are the Different Types of Water Filters?
There are several different types of water filters that you can get for your home to improve your water. Most purification systems use reverse osmosis, water softeners, or ultraviolet technology to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from your water.
Reverse Osmosis Systems
Reverse Osmosis filters solve most of your water problems since they remove 99.9% of VOCs from your water supply at the point of entry. They help to remove heavy metals, chlorine, and even have been known to remove some waterborne viruses. They make it so you can drink water straight from your faucet.
Water Softeners
Water softeners remove heavy metals from your water supply to prevent buildup and hard water. Softened water improves your hair and skin, health, and gives appliances like your dishwasher and washing machine a longer lifespan.
Countertop Water Filters
Countertop water filters are installed near your water faucet to make your tap water taste better and become drinkable. While these are great for drinking water, they don’t work throughout your whole house.
Isn’t the Municipal Water Supply Treated?
While city water goes through a basic filtration process, it isn’t enough to have clean water in your home.
